It is evening, the truck is still two hours short of the destination, the driver is tired, and the load is a family's entire house. Somebody has to decide whether to push on in the dark or stop. The wrong decision gets made when nobody planned for it.
Short intercity runs finish in a day. A long haul, such as Abuja to Lagos with a full household, may not. If the trip might go past one day, plan the stop before you set out.
Decide early whether the trip needs a stop
Ask these questions when you plan the move.
- How far is the drop-off, and how heavy is the load?
- Will the truck start early enough to arrive in daylight?
- Is there a second driver, or one person doing the whole trip?
- Are there stops for loading, fuel or a second pickup on the way?
If the answer to the last two is "one driver, many stops", expect to stop overnight. It is better to plan it than to have a tired driver rushing at the end. See preparing a household load for a long highway trip for the packing side.
Where a loaded truck can rest
Pick the stop before you leave the city, not at 8 p.m. on the road. Good places usually share these features:
- A fenced, lit compound with a gate and someone on duty, such as a hotel car park, a fuel station with a large yard or a transport park.
- A town large enough to have food, water and repair help.
- Somewhere reachable before dark, so the driver is not searching for a place late.
Avoid stopping on an empty roadside, a dark verge or a spot where nobody can see the truck. The driver's judgement counts here: if a place does not feel right, move on to the next.
Protecting the load overnight

The load is the customer's whole home, so treat it as such.
- Check the straps, ropes and tarpaulin before the stop. Re-tighten anything that loosened over the road. See securing a load for the checks.
- Lock the cab and, if the body has one, the rear door.
- Park with the tail against a wall or another vehicle if you can, so nobody can open the back easily.
- Keep valuables out of the truck. Cash, jewellery, laptops and documents go with the owner, not with the load.
- Take photos of the load at the stop, so you can show its state if there is any question later.
Do not unload for the night. Unloading and reloading adds damage risk and delays.
What the customer and driver should agree
Before the trip starts, agree these points in the chat:
- Whether an overnight stop is likely, and where.
- Who pays for the parking, if there is a fee. Settle this in the offer, not at the gate.
- How the customer will be updated: a call at the stop and a call at departure.
- Whether the customer travels separately and arrives first to receive the load.
A short message at the stop, such as "Parked safely, will leave at six", is worth a lot. Do not promise arrival times that depend on traffic.

The driver's own rest
A tired driver is the largest risk on a long trip. Sleep, eat and drink water. Do a walk-around check in the morning: tyres, fuel, load, tarpaulin. Start early, since the morning is calmer than the evening. Our guide on fuel, maintenance and route discipline lists the daily habits.
For customers who cannot travel
If you cannot go with the load, give the driver a contact at the destination who will be there to receive it, even if the truck arrives later than planned. Read what to carry in your own car when the truck goes ahead so you know which things must not travel in the truck.
How to do this on Sphere
Open the app, choose a truck, and add the pickup and drop-off for the two cities. Describe the load, and say if you expect a long trip and a stop on the way. Propose a price. Nearby verified drivers accept or send counter-offers, and a counter-offer may reflect the extra time. Choose the offer you are happy with, and agree the stop, the updates and loading help with the driver before you accept. For route help, see truck hire in Lagos.
Frequently asked questions
Will my long haul always need an overnight stop?
No. Many intercity trips finish in a day when they start early and have one pickup. A longer route, a heavy load or several stops may mean a stop.
Is it safe to leave a loaded truck overnight?
It can be, if it is parked in a fenced, lit compound with someone on duty, and the load is secured and locked. Avoid empty roadsides.
Who pays for overnight parking?
Agree it with the driver before accepting an offer, so it is part of the deal.
Should I leave valuables in the truck?
No. Carry cash, documents, phones and jewellery with you.
Can I get updates during a long trip?
Agree a call at the stop and a call at departure. Do not expect guaranteed arrival times, as traffic and roads vary.
