When you need a truck, not a van

If the load would take two or three trips in a pickup van, get a truck. One trip, one driver, one price. In Lagos that usually means jobs like these:

• moving out of a two-bedroom flat or anything bigger
• relocating an office with desks, cabinets and equipment
• shifting shop stock to a new shop or a warehouse
• collecting bulk goods from a market or a supplier
• carrying building materials or machinery that is safe to transport

A fridge, a washing machine and a few boxes do not need a truck. A pickup van will usually do it, and it gets through tight streets in Yaba or Mushin far more easily.

How truck hire works on Sphere

1. Open the app, choose Truck, and add your pickup and drop-off in Lagos.
2. Describe the load. Name the big pieces, count the boxes, and flag anything fragile or very heavy.
3. Propose your price, the amount you are willing to pay for the job.
4. Drivers nearby accept your price or send a counter-offer. Look through them and pick the one that suits you.
5. The driver comes to your pickup point and moves your goods at the price you agreed.

Getting a better truck offer in Lagos

Drivers price a job on how much work and risk it looks like. A vague request gets a cautious, high counter-offer. A clear one gets priced properly.

So write the request the way you would explain it to someone standing in your parlour. "3-bedroom flat, 2 fridges, 1 wardrobe that comes apart, about 30 boxes" gets a sensible offer. "House items" gets a guess.

Tell drivers how the truck gets in. Estate gates, narrow streets and roads where a truck cannot stop for long all change the job. So do stairs: carrying a wardrobe down from the fourth floor with no lift is a different afternoon from a ground-floor pickup.

Timing matters too. A move that avoids the worst traffic on the bridges and the Lekki-Epe Expressway is easier for a driver to plan, and that often shows in the offers you get.

Before the truck arrives

• Boxes: pack and label them, and keep fragile ones together.
• Furniture: take beds and big wardrobes apart where you can.
• Estate security: tell them the truck is coming, and get a gate pass if your estate uses one.
• Loading help: agree loading and offloading with the driver before you accept an offer.
• Valuables: documents, cash and jewellery travel with you, not on the truck.
