The truck is at the gate at 8am on a Sunday, the road is empty, and the estate security says no moving vehicles until the afternoon. Sunday is a good day to move in Lagos for many families because they are off work, but it is also the day when estates, churches and neighbours have their own plans.

This guide helps you decide whether a Sunday suits your move and how to avoid the common blockers.

Why people choose Sunday

Most people who move on a Sunday give the same reasons:

  • They do not have to take a day off work.
  • The main roads are often quieter in the early morning.
  • Family and friends are free to help with packing and carrying.
  • The new place can be cleaned or set up on Saturday and Sunday evening.

None of this is guaranteed. Some Sundays are quiet, and some are not, so treat these as reasons to try and not as promises.

What can go wrong on a Sunday

Estate rules. Many estates restrict moving vehicles to certain days or hours, and some do not allow heavy vehicles on Sundays. Others need a gate pass arranged with the estate office, which may be closed. Ask the estate manager or the chairman before you plan, not on the morning.

Church and mosque traffic. Roads near a large church or mosque can have parked cars along both sides during services. Ask the gateman or a neighbour what the street looks like between about 8am and noon. A truck that cannot reach your gate is a truck that cannot load.

Events and outings. Weekend parties, funerals and burials sometimes close part of a street. Our guide on planning a move around owambe weekends covers how to check.

Shops and services. Hardware shops, fuel stations and phone shops may be closed or open late. If you need packing tape, rope or a replacement bulb, buy it on Saturday.

Neighbours. Noise from carrying wardrobes at dawn can annoy neighbours who want to sleep or get ready for church. A short word in advance helps.

A Sunday move plan

  1. Ask the estate or landlord about Sunday access by Wednesday.
  2. Get any gate pass or approval in writing, or at least in a message.
  3. Pack and label on Friday and Saturday, so Sunday is only loading and driving. See our final 24 hours checklist.
  4. Ask the driver for an early start, then confirm with a call the evening before.
  5. Move the heavy furniture first, while the street is quiet.
  6. Keep one person at the gate at the old house and one at the new house to deal with security.
  7. Finish the main loading by late morning if you can, before the road fills up.

If the new estate only lets trucks in during the afternoon, split the plan: load in the morning, drive across, and wait until the allowed time to offload. Agree this with the driver before you accept an offer, because waiting changes the job.

Tell the driver everything that is different about the day

Put these in your load description or message:

  • Estate name and any Sunday restriction.
  • Whether you have a gate pass.
  • Stairs or a narrow gate.
  • Your preferred start time.
  • Whether anyone is available at the destination.

Drivers can plan around a problem they know about. A problem they find at the gate costs everyone time.

Sunday evening

After the truck has gone, keep your bed, bedding, kettle, phone chargers and the next day's clothes within reach. Our guide to the first night in your new home lists what to unpack first.

How to do this on Sphere

Open the app and choose a truck or pickup van for your household. Add the pickup and drop-off and describe the load: "three-bedroom flat, two wardrobes, one fridge, no lift, second floor". Note the Sunday plan and any estate restriction. Propose a price, and nearby verified drivers will accept it or send counter-offers. Agree loading and offloading help with the driver before you accept an offer.

Frequently asked questions

Is Sunday a good day to move in Lagos?

It often suits families who work during the week, and the roads are usually quieter early in the morning. Check estate rules and local events first, because they can still block a truck.

Do estates allow moving on Sundays?

Some do and some do not. Ask the estate office or chairman in advance and get the answer in writing if you can.

What time should I start a Sunday move?

Early is usually best, before church and event traffic builds up. Confirm the time with the driver the evening before.

Should I tell neighbours about a Sunday move?

Yes. A short message the day before avoids complaints about early noise and helps neighbours keep the street clear.

What if the estate only allows afternoon access?

Load in the morning, travel when the road is quiet and wait for the allowed time to offload. Agree the waiting with the driver before accepting an offer.
