You have asked for a truck for Saturday morning. At 9am the driver calls: the street is full of canopies, a band is setting up, and half the road is parked with guests' cars. The truck cannot get within two hundred metres of your gate.

In Lagos, Saturdays are a favourite day for moving and also a favourite day for parties, funerals, weddings and church programmes. A little planning avoids the worst of it.

Know your own street first

The first question is not about the city, it is about your street and the one you are moving to. Ask the neighbours, the gateman and the caretaker:

  • Is there a wedding, naming ceremony or burial this weekend?
  • Does the estate or the church hold regular events on this day?
  • Is there a market day or a weekly gathering near the gate?
  • Is the street used for car parking on event days?

Do this at both ends. A quiet pickup and a blocked drop-off is just as bad as the reverse.

Choose the hour, not only the day

Events usually build through the day. Marquee setup, caterers and sound crews often arrive early, and guests tend to arrive later, so the early morning is often the quietest period. A start at first light is often easier than a start at midday, though you should confirm with people who know your area.

For most moves, a start as early as the estate allows is the safest plan. If the estate has a gate pass or time limit, read our guide on getting past the estate gate.

Consider a weekday instead

If you have flexibility, a weekday morning avoids many party clashes, though it adds its own traffic. Our post on the weekend move plan from Surulere to Lekki explains the trade-offs between weekend and weekday moves.

For a shop or office, an evening or Sunday after church can work well, depending on the area.

Tell the driver everything

When you request a truck, the driver cannot see the street. Put the facts in your description and message:

  1. The exact gate and nearest landmark.
  2. Any known event nearby and the likely parking problem.
  3. Where the truck can stop if the gate is blocked.
  4. A phone number for the gateman or caretaker.
  5. Whether the street can be reached by a smaller vehicle if a truck cannot get in.

Drivers are used to this kind of detail and will price and plan better when they have it.

Have a plan B for the last stretch

If the truck cannot reach your door, the move is not lost, but you need a short plan:

  • Park the truck at the nearest open point and carry the load in stages.
  • Use extra helpers for the carry and agree who pays or arranges them.
  • Ask a neighbour or the event organisers if a short section of kerb can be cleared for twenty minutes. Politeness works better than pushing.
  • Delay the move by an hour or two if the event setup is clearly going to clear.

For long carries, read our post on moving from tight-access homes.

Be gentle with the people at the event

A moving truck near a wedding is a nuisance, and a blocked road can start arguments. Be polite, keep voices low and do not leave the truck in a place that stops guests or an ambulance from passing. Tell the driver to avoid horn blasts near a funeral or church service.

If the event organisers have security staff, greet them and explain you will be quick. A friendly word often gets you a corner to park in.

Check the route with the driver

Event closures, parked cars and guests walking on the road can affect the whole route, not only the gate. Agree a route with the driver, and an alternative if a road is blocked. See the notes on staging a truck on a busy Lagos street for loading etiquette.

How to do this on Sphere

Open the app, choose a truck or pickup van, add the pickup and drop-off, and describe the load. Add a note about any event on either street and the best arrival time. Propose a price, and nearby verified drivers will accept or send counter-offers. Agree the arrival time, and loading and offloading help, with the driver before you accept an offer.

Frequently asked questions

Is Saturday a bad day to move in Lagos?

Not always, but it is a popular day for events. Ask about your street, start early and have a back-up plan.

How do I find out about events near my gate?

Ask the gateman, caretaker and neighbours at both addresses a day or two before the move.

What if the truck cannot reach my gate?

Park at the nearest open point and carry the load in stages with extra helpers, or wait for the setup to clear.

Should I tell the driver about the event?

Yes. Add it to the load description and send the details in a message so the driver can plan the route and timing.

Can I move on a Sunday instead?

Often yes, but check church services and local events first. Early morning is usually easiest.
