Moving Between Central Abuja and Satellite Towns: Planning Guide

Planning a move between central Abuja and satellite towns like Kubwa, Lugbe or Gwagwalada: timing, access at both ends and route details drivers need.

The truck has reached Kubwa. Somewhere in a newer phase, the driver is on a street with no sign, outside a gate with no number painted on it, and he is calling you. You are still in Wuse handing the keys back to your old landlord, and all you can tell him is "it is near a church".

People leave Wuse, Garki or Maitama for more space in Kubwa, Lugbe or Gwagwalada, and others come the opposite way to be closer to work. These moves go wrong in the same few places, and few of them have anything to do with the driving.

Why these moves are harder than they look

They are longer than a move inside one district, so traffic, weather or a wrong turn has more room to eat into the day. Some streets in fast-growing areas do not show up clearly on maps, and house numbers are not always obvious. And the two ends can be completely different. One may have a lift, a security desk and strict estate rules. The other may sit at the end of a narrow unpaved road.

None of that is a problem if you plan for it. The trouble starts when people treat a cross-town move like a short one.

Timing

Main roads between the satellite towns and the centre are often busy at commuting hours, usually towards the centre on weekday mornings and back out in the evenings. Conditions change, so treat that as a pattern, not a timetable.

What I would do:

  • Start early, so loading is done before the busiest part of the day.
  • Look at a weekend if your estate allows moves then. Many people find the roads calmer, though markets and events can still slow some areas.
  • In the rainy season, add extra time. Rain slows traffic and makes unpaved access roads harder for heavy vehicles.
  • Leave slack in the afternoon. Do not request a driver a handover that only works if everything runs on time.

Check access at both ends

Access causes more delays than distance does. Check both addresses before moving day, not on it.

At a central estate or apartment block

Find out if the estate wants a gate pass or advance notice for a moving vehicle, and if moves are limited to set hours. Ask about the lift and if you can reserve it. Then see where a truck can actually park and how far that is from your door. Our Abuja estate move-in guide goes into estate rules in more detail.

In a satellite town

Here the questions are about the road. Is it paved all the way to the house? Is it wide enough for a truck, or will a pickup van be more practical? Are there gutters, low cables or tight corners near the gate? Is there space to park and turn?

If you do not know, go and look, or ask a neighbour or your landlord. A photo of the street and gate saves many phone calls.

Put the route in your request

Drivers who understand the job price it more accurately and arrive prepared. Give them:

  • Full addresses at both ends, plus landmarks nearby: a church, mosque, school, filling station or junction.
  • The district or phase of the satellite town, because some of these areas are spread out.
  • Gate and estate details: pass needed, gate hours, the security contact.
  • Access notes, written plainly: "last 300 metres is unpaved", "narrow street, van easier than truck", "third floor, no lift".
  • A contact person at the other end if you will not be there yourself.

"Wuse to Kubwa, two-bedroom flat" leaves drivers guessing. Add the estate, the floor, the landmarks and the access notes and the offers you get back will be much clearer.

Choosing the vehicle

A pickup van suits a small flat or a partial move, and it copes better with narrow or rough streets. Pickup vans are listed on the app up to 2,400kg.

A truck suits a full home and saves you a second trip. Trucks are listed up to 27,000kg.

On a long route, one well-planned trip usually beats two smaller ones. If the street can take a truck, request a driver the truck. If it cannot, a van with a clear plan for the number of trips beats a truck stuck at the junction.

The day itself

Pack and label everything the day before. Keep documents, keys and valuables with you, not on the vehicle. If the driver is struggling to find the house, share your live location with him by phone. And have someone at the drop-off to open the gate, so the truck is not idling outside while the gateman looks for the key.

How to do this on Sphere

  1. Open the Sphere app and choose a pickup van or a truck.
  2. Add both addresses with landmarks, gate details and access notes.
  3. Describe the load, the floors and any help you need. Agree loading and offloading help with the driver before you accept an offer.
  4. Propose your price. Distance, vehicle, load, access and timing all affect what drivers will accept.
  5. Compare acceptances and counter-offers from verified drivers and choose the one that suits you.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best time to move from central Abuja to Kubwa or Lugbe?

Early in the day often works best, before commuting traffic builds. Weekends can be calmer too, but check your estate's rules on moving days and hours first.

Should I hire a truck or a van for a satellite town move?

Let the load and the access at both ends decide. A van is easier on narrow or unpaved streets, while a truck can move a full home in one trip if the road can take it.

How do I help a driver find my new house in Gwagwalada?

Give the full address, the district or phase, nearby landmarks and a phone number for someone at the house. A short note about the last stretch of road helps a lot.

Does Sphere operate in Abuja's satellite towns?

Sphere operates in Abuja, and you add your pickup and drop-off in the app. Clear landmarks and access notes help nearby drivers respond.

How is the price set for a longer Abuja move?

You propose a price and drivers accept it or send a counter-offer. Distance, vehicle size, load, floors, access and timing all affect what a fair price looks like.
