How to Move Home Gym Equipment: Treadmills and Weights

How to move home gym equipment safely: dismantle treadmills and benches, lock moving parts, pack weight plates and pick between a van and a truck.

The treadmill is folded against the wall of the spare room. Six boxes of weight plates are waiting by the door, and the staircase turns twice before it reaches the ground floor. Somebody suggests carrying the treadmill down "as it is". That is how consoles get cracked and fingers get trapped.

Treadmills are heavy and lopsided. Plates are so dense that a few boxes can outweigh a sofa. Benches and bikes have pins that catch on every door frame. Here is how to take it all apart, pack it and load it properly.

Find the manuals first

Before anyone picks up a spanner, find the manual for each machine. If it is lost, the manufacturer's website usually has a copy under the model number, normally on a sticker near the base.

It tells you which parts come off and in what order, whether there is a transport lock or locking pin, and what the main unit weighs, which decides how many people you need on the lift.

Follow the manufacturer's guidance on dismantling. If a step looks risky, like opening a motor housing or releasing a hydraulic cylinder, skip it. A bulky piece moved whole beats one rebuilt wrongly.

Treadmills

This is usually the heaviest and most fragile piece. Work in this order:

  1. Switch off at the wall and unplug. Coil the cable and tape it to the frame so it cannot drag or get trapped under a foot.
  2. Pull out the safety key and any loose accessories, like the tablet holder or cup holders. Bag them and label the bag.
  3. If the deck folds, raise it to the upright position and engage the latch or pin. Check it is fully locked before you tilt the machine even slightly.
  4. Remove the console only if the manual says to. Some have cables running through the uprights that are easy to damage.
  5. Wrap the console and deck in moving blankets or thick cardboard and hold it in place with stretch film. Keep film off the screen itself if it might leave residue.

Lift from the frame at the base. The console and handrails look like handles, but unless the manual says they are load-bearing, leave them alone.

Bikes and cross-trainers

Drop the seat and handlebars to their lowest positions and tighten the adjusters. Tape a bag of bolts and small parts to the frame, and wrap the flywheel housing and console in blankets. The flywheel is often the heaviest part, so the stronger person takes that end.

Benches, racks and multi-gyms

Adjustable benches fold or come apart in a few pieces. Bag the pins and wrap the upholstered pads on their own, because vinyl tears easily against metal.

For a multi-gym, the manual will usually describe how to take the stack plates off. Never move one with the stack loaded. Photograph the cable routing before you dismantle anything, because you will need those photos to rebuild it.

Plates, dumbbells and kettlebells

The classic mistake is one big carton filled with plates. The bottom gives way on the stairs.

  • Use small, strong boxes or plastic crates and fill them only partly. If you cannot lift a box with a straight back, it is too heavy.
  • Take every plate off the bar. Never move a loaded barbell.
  • Separate plates with cardboard or old towels so they do not chip or rattle.
  • Write "HEAVY" on several sides of each box so nobody grabs one casually.
  • Wrap dumbbell handles so they cannot roll if a box tips.

Never leave loose weights on the vehicle floor. Under hard braking they slide into everything.

Where it sits in the vehicle

The treadmill base and boxes of plates go in low and towards the front, close to the cab. Spread heavy items across the floor. Tall items stand upright and get strapped against the side walls. Nothing heavy goes on top of anything upholstered or fragile.

Most drivers know this. Still point out the dense boxes before loading starts.

Van or truck?

For a single treadmill or exercise bike, a bench and a few boxes of weights, request a driver a pickup van. On the Sphere app, pickup vans are listed up to 2,400kg.

request a driver a truck if you are moving a full home gym (rack, multi-gym, several machines and a large set of plates) or combining the gym with a house move. Trucks are listed up to 27,000kg.

Unsure? List every item with its weight from the manuals, then read our guide to choosing the right truck size.

The carry is the hard part

Getting a treadmill down a narrow staircase is usually harder than the drive. Before moving day, measure doorways and stair turns against the folded size of each machine, and line up enough people. Many treadmills need at least two to lift safely. Agree loading and offloading help with the driver before you accept an offer.

How to do this on Sphere

  1. Open the Sphere app and pick a pickup van or truck based on your list.
  2. Add the pickup and drop-off, including floor levels and whether there is a lift.
  3. Describe the load clearly, for example "folding treadmill, exercise bike, bench, six boxes of weight plates, all ground floor".
  4. Propose your price. Nearby verified drivers accept it or send a counter-offer, and you choose.

Frequently asked questions

Can I move a treadmill without dismantling it?

Often, yes, if it folds, locks and fits through your doorways. Follow the manufacturer's guidance and remove only the parts the manual says can come off.

How should I pack weight plates for a move?

Use small, strong boxes or crates and fill them only partly. Put cardboard or towels between plates and write "HEAVY" on several sides of each box.

Do I need a truck for home gym equipment?

Usually not. A pickup van handles one or two machines and some weights. request a driver a truck for a full gym or a gym plus a house move.

Will the driver help carry the treadmill?

Not automatically. Mention the weight and the stairs in your request, and agree loading and offloading help with the driver before you accept an offer.

How do I stop equipment moving around in the van?

Load heavy items low and towards the front, strap tall items to the side walls and never leave loose weights on the floor.
